Part L software demonstration

Visitors to Day Two of resource05 can see a new software tool in action that simplifies the task of assessing the energy performance of buildings.

Commissioned by ODPM and developed by BRE, SBEM simplifies the job of the national calculation methodology for non-domestic buildings. It demonstrates a building's compliance with minimum energy performance standards, and works outs its EPBD asset rating. This rating shows how much energy the building uses under standardised design conditions and its comparison with the Notional building, and will have to be made available to prospective purchasers and tenants.

Bernard Bulkin

Step change needed

We can cut the carbon intensity of our buildings by at least 60%. And that is just a start, according to Bernard Bulkin of the Sustainable Development Commission. Dr Bulkin will be looking at some of the big issues connected with sustainable development, on the opening morning of resource05. He sees sustainable development as a lens through which to view policies, regulation, corporate action and individual behaviour, and from there to make progress on carbon emissions, water efficiency, construction materials and the question of waste.

Elephant and Castle

Regeneration: what does £1.5 billion get you?

Chris Horn from the Elephant and Castle Project Team will be speaking about how they are dealing with the challenges of delivering sustainable communities on Day Three of resource05.

Elephant and Castle is the focus of a £1.5 billion, 10-year regeneration programme.

The area will be a showcase for low-carbon communities, delivering a range of sustainable energy techniques and technologies. An essential part of the programme is to trial groundbreaking renewable energy technologies, such as wind turbines and fuel from used cooking oil.

Solar Thermal

New product launch at resource05

Solar Thermal will be launching the Windhager Biowin wood pellet boiler – a new product exclusive to the UK . The unit will be displayed in the main exhibition marquee and will also be on long-term display in the Hanson demonstration house.

The Biowin boiler burns wood pellets and logs to produce controllable renewable heating. With a performance range of 2.9 to 26 kW, the Biowin can be installed in both domestic and commercial premises.

Solar Thermal specialise in the design and installation of solar and biomass wood pellet systems, and are UK partners for Windhager Products.

London Bus

Public transport cleans up

London Buses will be demonstrating a pioneering project to reduce air pollution and noise – zero-emission fuel cell buses. The only emission from a fuel cell bus is water, which forms a vapour cloud as it leaves the exhaust and enters the atmosphere.

The bus will be used to do the peak-time morning and afternoon shuttle runs between Watford Junction and BRE on Day One of resource05. It will stand as an exhibit during the rest of the day.

Integer House

Masterplanning forum

BRE will be hosting a drinks reception and discussion forum to consider sustainability and masterplanning in the Integer House at 4pm until 6pm on 15 September (Day 3) of resource05.

Masterplanning in the 21st century is a complex business:

  • Clients need to understand evolving and ever more stringent environmental legislation and planning policy.
  • Masterplanners need to learn new skills to deal with sustainability challenges such as renewable energy and low carbon targets.
  • RDAs and Planning Authorities have to set challenging but achievable environmental performance targets.
  • Planning consultants and client advisors need to ensure the swift and effective progression of planning applications.

To register interest, please email randallb@bre.co.uk. Please note that numbers for this session will be limited due to the capacity of the Integer House.

Free events for exhibition-only visitors

Those not attending the main conference don't have to miss out. Free events for exhibition-only visitors are being held on all three days of resource05, including tours, workshops, seminars and presentations from exhibitors and main conference speakers.

For full details of what's on, go to www.resource05.co.uk/programme.jsp.

Are you involved?

A few exhibition spaces in the main marquee are still available. If you want to secure one of these to showcase your company’s services or products, call Matt Batey on 01923 664287.
