Make your views heard

Delegates at resource05 will have a chance to influence the future of low carbon development, with input into a number of government sustainability initiatives.

There will be a daily d ebate on the DTI consultation on Microgeneration and Low Carbon Buildings as well as discussions on the EU Green Paper on Energy Efficiency, and the government’s plans for implementing the new Part L of the Building Regulations.

Barnsley benefits from biomass

One of the first Authorities to adopt a 'Biomass Burning Policy', Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council seems to be one step ahead of the rest. On Day 3 of resource05, Barnsley ’s Principal Energy Engineer, Dick Bradford, will talk about their biomass policy and its success stories.

The Borough's commitment to favour biomass applications in all new and refurbished public buildings has dramatically increased the demand for wood energy in the region. Dick Bradford says, ‘We firmly believe that our biomass policy will play a major role in meeting the Governments CO2 reduction target for 2060 from 1990 levels, within this decade.’

At home with sustainability

Day one of resource05 will look at some exciting housing projects including The Passivhaus Project in Germany which has developed houses that use only 25% of the energy of a standard new-build dwelling. A passive house heats and cools itself, without any active heating or cooling system.

Meet the new generation power

Delegates can see Cenergie’s 10kW fuel-cell, which will be installed as a full-size working exhibit at resource05. These green machines use hydrogen and oxygen to generate energy free of all hazardous emissions , the only by-product being water. Cenergie’s mission is to be the first mass manufacturer of hydrogen Alkaline Fuel Cells to offer an affordable and sustainable alternative to fossil fuel power.

Low carbon technology in action

Full-scale working exhibits will be fitted to BRE’s Innovation Park Houses, to show how these new technologies fit into a real environment. Installations include a number of small-scale wind turbines, plus solar thermal, biomass boilers and PV systems.

£650,000 wasted in heating bills by new homes every year

The sponsors of resource05, the Energy Saving Trust, have commissioned a report that reveals that new homes are emitting 6,000 tonnes more carbon dioxide each year than they should be as a result of non-compliance with minimum airtightness standards.

With around 1 million new homes set to be built over the next five years, over 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions released into the atmosphere could be saved each year.
