New speaker for Sustainable Communities Day

Allan Jones MBE, formerly of Woking Borough Council and now with the London Climate Change Agency will be leading a debate at resource05 on the Sustainable Communites Day (15th September).

At Woking Borough Council, Allan worked on energy and water efficiency, combined heat and power (CHP), alternative fuels for transport, fuel cells and renewable energy technologies. Woking has installed nearly 10% of Britain's solar energy photovoltaics and is also home to the first fuel cell CHP system in the UK.

With the London Climate Change Agency, Allan will be bringing his expertise to London to implement the Mayor’s Energy Strategy.

Allan was appointed a MBE in the Millennium New Year’s Honours List for services to energy and water efficiency and played a big role in helping the Council win the Queen’s Award for Enterprise – the first time a local authority received that award.

Renewables Heat Pavilion

A new feature at resourceO5 will be the Renewables Heat Pavilion.
Run by the National Energy Foundation (NEF), the pavilion will include exhibitors such as the British Pellet Club, the Ground Source Heat Pump Club and the Solar Trade Association.

Making resourceO5 climate neutral – an update

The CO2 emissions generated by resource05 will be offset by Climate Care in projects such as low-energy lighting in South Africa . Ninety-five percent of the country’s electricity is generated from coal in power stations, so CO2 emissions per unit of electricity are some of the highest in the world.

Climate Care’s work with Municipalities, housing developers and local wildlife groups across South Africa expects to install 50,000 low-energy lamps into people's homes and the community – these lamps use only a fifth of the electricity of a standard bulb.

A school enviro-group in Ladysmith managed by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa has this month been declared winner of the international Volvo Adventure award for environmental projects. Climate Care provided the group with 4000 lamps, who distributed them to householders, schools, etc, as part of a wider energy efficiency campaign to their community.

Visit the Climate Care website at www.climatecare.org.

Details of the conference programme are now available on www.resource05.co.uk/programme.html and delegates can book online at www.resource05.co.uk/booking1.jsp. Visitors to the free exhibition can also register.
